An Unique Alternative To Glasses & Normal Contact Lenses

What Is Orth0-K?

Ortho-K is the use of specially designed  contact lenses to alter the shape of the cornea in order to correct short-sight.

The technique of Ortho-K is an alternative to laser eye surgery.

The cornea is highly elastic, however, and always returns to its original shape. For this reason retainer lenses are worn nightly and are removed upon waking so you have perfect vision all day and all night - with no contact lenses or glasses.

Why Have Ortho-K Done?

image23

The main purpose of Ortho-K is to be free of both contact lenses and glasses during your day and your evening.

This freedom is ideal if you are into sports or if you work in dusty, dirty or dry environments (such as air conditioned offices). Even if you simply  find spectacles and conventional contact lenses just a plain nuisance, ortho-k eliminates the hassle of both.

In addition those who need to have a certain degree of vision to satisfy their employers or a licensing body (e.g. pilots, police) can also be helped by Ortho-K.

Possibly one of the ideal situations for using Ortho-K is for the child or teenager with early short sight. Not only does it have all the advantages already given above, but the procedure appears to slow down and reduce the short-sight vsion.

What's Involved?

image24

First an initial assessment appointment including a full eye examination and computerised corneal topographical scanning - this sounds technical but it's basically a 3D picture of your cornea, nothing to be scared of.

This gives a chance to both assess the general condition and health of the eyes and also to determine the likely effectivity of the treatment for your eyes.

A series of Ortho-K contact lenses, made from highly breathable material, are then fitted in progressive stages to gently reshape the cornea towards less curvature and a more spherical shape. This then dramatically improves your natural vision.

Most of the visual changes occur rapidly in the first few weeks requiring several aftercare checks and lens design tweaks. The program length varies between 1 and 3 months depending upon the degree of visual error. From there on, it's simply a check up with myself once every 6 months.

Ortho-K Versus Laser Surgery

image25

The Advantages of ortho-k

  • It does not cause the permanent hazy vision experienced by some patients following laser surgery.
  • Both eyes are done together (rather than several weeks or months apart)
  • Changes in prescription over time can be dealt without surgery.
  • The procedure is REVERSIBLE (Lasik is not!).
  • There is no post-operative pain.
  • Ortho-K is significantly cheaper and does not preclude surgery in the future.

THE DISADVANTAGES OF ORTHO-K

  • You must be prepared to allow for 4-6 visits over 3-6 months.
  • Overnight retainer lens wear is essential or the cornea will revert to its original shape.
  • The degree of success is high but cannot always be guaranteed.
  • The speed of reduction in the short-sight varies from one person to the next.
  • You must follow instructions implicitly for the best results.

HOW MUCH IS ORTHO-K?

To see if you are suitable you will need a full eye examination with myself, which £29.

The procedure can be time consuming and involves a series of consultations. For this reason

(providing you are suitable for the lenses) there is a fitting fee of £150 which covers all appointments for the first year.

If you are successful with the lenses the only on going cost is a flat fee of £35 per month, this covers lens replacements and all professional eye care checks.

If for any reason the lenses do not work  you will be given a £150 credit to use at my practice.
